There is a strong economic argument for completing the switch now in the U.S. as it can help promote more trade. With the current weak dollar this is a good time to make a stronger push for more exports. Having products with measurement units that already match those of most of the rest of the world reduces costs and enables more products to be exposed to the international market. This means that short term costs to switch should be a good investment for the country overall. U.S. consumers likewise can benefit from reduced prices for some products and a greater variety of products available.
There are also benefits from reduced time spent on education of the outdated system and more natural proficiency with the newer more universal system. Students, scientists, and engineers in particular can have a more intuitive grasp of work done internationally and save time spent on performing conversions. This makes them more productive and competitive when compared to international colleagues. The cost in time and money for conversions of data and products is actually quite significant in certain industries.

A friend of mine heard from someone who works at Rim that they and Apple are working on a phone! If I thoght that this news would do anything to Apple or Rim stock, I would not be telling you. I already own Apple and cannot see Rim's advancing any more than a few points on the news.

Call me naive (or perhaps paranoid) but I've been assuming my location is being tracked since I bought my first smart phone years ago.
I guess the fine point of difference is: It is stored on your phone (and computer where you do the backup), but it is never send to anyone ... so Apple is not tracking you since they never see that information. Saying Apple tracks you would mean that information collected is send to Apple, which is not the case.

I think John Hodgman could easily make a great cell phone quickly -- it's one of the areas of his expertise! ;)
For the record, Apple did just "walk in" to the MP3 market and figured it out pretty quickly. Perhaps the idea that making devices is complicated is why Palm went from being the "next big thing" to obscurity. Apple has an excellent track record of making things simple. Applying that philosophy to cell phones would be mighty powerful especially compared to the bloated victims of chronic feature creep.
I regard the market of PDA's to be a colossal failure. Sure, it's a niche market that makes some money for a slimmed-down Palm and a division of Microshaft, but it could have been so much more if it were done well.

...No prob with a H.264 at 2-6 mpbs. Files for a 90 minute movie at 700 mb (near-DVD-quality...I just hope for a renting solution as this is what people do with MOVIES.... If they have another solution: bring it on; it's gonna make sense.

They wouldn't have to do that. You know ESPN Mobile, Boost Mobile, and AMP'd mobile? They are all "virtual" networks that lease bandwidth from other providers who actually have a physical network. These "virtual" wireless companies are called MVNOs. Apple could become an MVNO (and it has been rumored in the past that would do so), so that they could offer all the features they want, and ensure a consistent experience across the entire user base.
How successful are MVNOs? Last I heard ESPN and Disney mobile are rumored to be shutting down due to low subscriber numbers.

The answer is 288. Anyone who think's it is two doesn't know math.
They know math, just not the order of operations. Or they are putting the whole equation into a scientific calculator, Google, or spotlight. If they did the problems in a calculator, google or spotlight with the correct order of operations, then theyd get the correct answer.

My 2-year contract finishes next month and my 3G is almost inoperative. No way I want to buy into the antenna problems with a 4. Glad you're happy though.
You can always pick up a used 4 to hold you over.
And the 'antenna problems' were a media and hater frenzy, nothing more.
Personally, I'm glad that I won't have to churn on upgrading for a few months more. Fact is that my 4 does everything I need short of NFR, and I don't really NEED that.
As a user, I'd be glad to use my 4 for another year.
As an AAPL holder, I'd like to see a 5 come out simply to kick the Verizon sales in the butt.
You can always pick up a used 4 to hold you over.

PLEASE can we have a UI update, even if it's a minor one (for instance, iTunes 10 scrollbars rather than the blue aqua ones). Just some extra polish really.

Change for the sake of change is not a good thing, and I am sure that is not why apple would be doing it. Technologies more than anything else changes rapidly. If ARM has a breakthrough technology in the pipe,and Apple is aware of it, surely they would be prepared to jump ship.
No one can think Apple would change stream, and not know what they were getting into. Innovation is Apples niche, and seems to be working well for them. Imagine if ARM is developing a revolutionary concept in processor technology that makes current transistors look like vacuum tube technology. It could happen! Who would argue that in 20 years computing and processor technology will be vastly different than what we see today. Who's to say that it couldn't happen in 2-5 years.

I know LG makes an MP3 player.. when I said Apple has about as much of a chance entering the cell phone market as LG has entering the MP3 market, what I was referring to is POPULARITY and MARKET SHARE.
When I said Apple doesn't have a history of 'working well with others', I was referring to other companies.
You don't just wake up one day and start selling phones.. there are a whole lot of other companies involved.. most importantly, a cell phone service provider. One who is willing to pay Apples per unit price and give the phone away for next to nothing in exchange for an end customer contract.
That's how the majority of cell phones are sold.. not walking into target and plunking down $250 and it's yours.. but signing a contract for a year or more and getting the phone at a significantly reduced rate, or even 'free'.
In order to be successful in the cell phone market, you need to have more than one cell service provider on board, willing to push your phones, and you have to do it at a price point thats comfortable for both the manufacturer of the phone, and the guy selling the phone.
Then in order to do that, you have to offer that particular provider something special.. like a special model available only at that particular provider. Which means Apple would have to either stick with a single carrier, or have multiple models.
Then finally, you have the convergence factor. I know a lot of people with cell phones. I know a lot of people with PDA's. I know a lot of people with MP3 players.
I don't know a lot of people who want all three devices wrapped up into one unit.
An iPod with the ability (but not a requirement) to connect to cellular networks to download content, I can see and think would be a hit.
Being able to add OPTIONAL, basic phone functions and texting to such a unit for those interested in such a thing, not bad.
But a full blown 'iPhone'? Big mistake.

Hardly Apple's fault. Apple has managed to transition all it's apps - Adobe is certainly dragging their collective feet.
Don't blame Apple at all, I just have a hard time getting excited about hardware that can't do what I need it to do. Looking forward to a Universal app from Adobe and Macromedia so I can be excited about Apple's offerings.

Talking about the cost of swtiching, I might just add� Stepping out onto the moon cost a pretty penny too. I guess beating the Soviets to bragging rights in space was more important than implementing common sense on the ground.

Wild speculation: It's possible that, for the short term, Apple might have both Intel and ARM processors in some of its machines. Think GPU or co-processor. This would allow a "Mac" to run iOS apps at full speed without processor emulation (albeit some chipset/environmental emulation).
I use Mac in quotes because such a hybrid monstrosity may in fact be iOS first, Mac second. Somewhere between an iPad and a MacBook Air.
It seems obvious that Apple wants this sort of blending, so why not do it in hardware?

It really appears as if TomTom didn't create any real inventory, and waited to see how popular the device would be. Now they are creating inventory based on orders. Not great, but I just don't think the car kit is worth $130 (w/tax) so I'll wait. The longer they wait to deliver it may be a plus for us because maybe we'll get a chance to see and hear reactions to the Magellan car kit.

First of all, welcome to the newest game brought to you by ravenvii and chrmjenkins. We will be referred in the rules and during the game as Game Masters. I will chiefly run the thread, while chrmjenkins will chiefly correspond with the Villain (as explained below). We will share equal burdens for story-telling.

In General:
The game begins with 1 villain and 7 heroes. The villain and each of the heroes have their own story and motivations that are PMed to them and not unveiled publicly.
The roles will be known to all from the beginning - there will be no secret roles. The only secrets in this game are: the full map (only the Game Masters and the villain has access) and the secret agencies and powers of the Couple, the Wizard and the Adventurers.
The map will be slowly revealed to the heroes as they move through the mansion.
The Villain:
The villain made a deal with Satan in which he takes over the mansion and it's many treasures and take control of The Artifact. The villain is the only player to have knowledge of the full map at the onset of the game.
With The Artifact, the villain is able to place monsters and traps anywhere in the mansion except the room in where the heroes are located during that round. Only one monster and trap can be set in a room. A monster and a trap can both coexist in a room, however. The Artifact also enables the villain to self-heal (1 HP per turn). The Artifact can only be accessed in the Lair. If the villain moves away from the Lair, he will not be able to use it to set monsters or traps or self-heal.
The villain starts at level 16, with 16 HP and 16 AP, and cannot level up whatsoever. His stats were determined by how many heroes there are in the game (two levels per each playing hero).
His Goal: to kill each and every hero invading his mansion.
The Heroes:
They all start at level 1. Their stats begin at 1 HP and 1 AP. Each time they level up, 1 HP and 1 AP will be added to their stats.
Certain heroes have special powers known only to them, and revealed to the other heroes at their own discretion.
The Couple: Two heroes who are the parents of a child who is suffering from a loathsome disease. To save their daughter, they must obtain The Artifact and call forth it's powers.
The Wizard: He was sent in by the King to slay the villain. He has awesome magical powers.
Adventurers: Here for glory and treasure.
Heroes’ Goal: the endgame is slightly different for the different classes, but they always requires killing the villain and retrieving The Artifact.

Yeah and that's what the loyalists said in the 80's, and there's less than 10% of us in the market now. You talk about security, but it's not a security threat to have a jailbroken user... oh wait, unless by security you're talking about someone picking up my phone and changing my home screen to 16 icon view instead of 12 that apple limits me too... oh the humanity. Call the pentagon, we have a breach... user is trying to put more icons on his screen than apple wants. Wake the president.

So Apple has to fix that hole to protect me. That has the side effect of not making the jailbreak anymore, but what do you want them to do? They have to protect me, the customer, when they find a security flaw. Right?
So that's what they do. Anyone who argues that Apple should just leave secuity holes in their OS isn't really being realistic.
